With FrontpagePlus you can have a frontpage for specific sections and categories The ‘Show on frontpage’ option Joomla offers, is quite limited. This opens up a lot of possibilities to use the frontpage option for not only your home page. Once installed you have an extra menu item type. If you make a new menu item, you can find the FrontpagePlus type under Internal link > > Articles. FrontpagePlus uses the core frontpage files to generate the output. If you use a template that has it’s own frontpage output, FrontpagePlus wil NOT use that. It might do in the future, but not at the moment.
